What are you actually worth?

Everything you own, less everything you owe. The figure moves as you type, nothing is sent anywhere, and you do not need an account. Leave blank anything that does not apply.

What you own

Cash

Current accounts, easy access and fixed-term savings.

Investments

A general investment account, shares held directly, crypto.

Pensions

Workplace and personal pensions with a pot value — the total across every provider.

Enter the cash equivalent transfer value from your scheme. See the note on /methodology — this figure is contested.

Property

What it would sell for today, not what you paid.

Buy-to-let, a holiday let, land, a share of a property.

Business

A realistic figure for your share of a business you own.

Other

Vehicles, valuables, money owed to you.

What you owe

Property
Short-term

Self assessment due in January, VAT, corporation tax you have set aside for.

Other
Student loan

Kept out of the headline figure by default. A student loan is written off after a fixed period and is repaid only on income above a threshold, so it behaves more like a tax than a debt. You can put it back in below.

Your age

Optional. Only used to show the published median for your age band.

Your position

Fill in whatever you know and your position appears here as you type. Nothing is sent anywhere, and there is no need to complete every line.

Two things this does differently

Your student loan is not in the total

Most calculators put it in with the credit cards. A student loan is repaid only on income above a threshold, is collected through payroll, and is written off after a fixed period whether or not anything is left. Someone earning below the threshold repays nothing and still has the balance wiped. That behaves like a graduate tax, and counting it as a debt makes millions of people look poorer than they are. It is shown separately here, and there is a tick box to put it back if you disagree.

The thresholds are Plan 1 £26,900, Plan 2 £29,385, Plan 4 £33,795, Plan 5 £25,000 — each at 9%; Postgraduate Loan £21,000 at 6% GOV.UK, rates and thresholds for employers, 2026 to 2027 tax year.

A final salary pension goes in at transfer value

There is no pot, so there is no obvious number. We use the cash equivalent transfer value your scheme will quote, because it is the only figure anyone actually publishes. It is not a perfect measure — it is what a scheme will pay to be rid of the promise, which is not the same as what the promise is worth to you, and for most people the promise is worth more. Read it as the bottom of a range.

Where the comparison comes from

If you enter your age, the calculator shows the published median for your age band. That comes from the Office for National Statistics, Wealth and Assets Survey, April 2020 to March 2022, published 24 January 2025. These are household figures by age of the household head, not individual figures, and ONS total wealth includes physical wealth such as vehicles and contents. They are stated in April 2020 to March 2022 prices, so they understate today's cash amounts. It is context, not a score.

Questions

What counts, what does not, and why the averages disagree

Does my pension count towards my net worth?

Yes, and leaving it out is the most common way people badly understate themselves. On the ONS measure of what household wealth is made of — Net property 40%, private pensions 35%, net financial 14%, physical 10% — pensions are more than every ISA, savings account and investment put together.

A defined contribution pot is easy: use its current value. A defined benefit pension has no pot to look up, and the honest answer is that any figure you put in is an estimate. A common rough approach is to multiply the annual income it promises by twenty, but the real value depends on your age, the scheme and what happens to your spouse. If you use a figure like that, know that you have estimated it.

The thing to hold on to is that a pension is wealth you cannot spend yet. It belongs in the total and it does not help you this month, which is why this calculator also shows you the figure with the house and the pension taken out.

Should I use my house value or my equity?

Equity — the value of the property less what is left on the mortgage. Entering the full value without the mortgage against it is not a net worth calculation at all, and it is the single largest error people make, because for most households the house is the biggest number on both sides of the statement.

Use a realistic sale price rather than the best figure an estate agent has ever mentioned. Net worth is not a thing to win.

Is my student loan a debt?

Most calculators say yes and list it beside a credit card. We think that is wrong, and it is worth understanding why before you decide how to treat it here.

A UK student loan behaves almost nothing like a debt. Repayment is Plan 1 £26,900, Plan 2 £29,385, Plan 4 £33,795, Plan 5 £25,000 — each at 9%; Postgraduate Loan £21,000 at 6%. Nobody can demand it back, it does not follow you if your income falls, it is not considered in the way other borrowing is, and the balance is written off in the end whether or not you have cleared it. It is closer to a graduate tax with an end date than to money you owe.

So this calculator lets you include it and count it, or include it and leave it out of the total. Both answers are defensible. What is not defensible is quietly treating it as though it were a personal loan, which is what happens on most sites.

Why does every site give a different average net worth for my age?

Because they are not measuring the same thing, and almost none of them say which thing they measured. Four choices move the number enormously: household or individual, with pensions or without, mean or median, and which survey year.

The mean is much higher than the median, because wealth has a long tail — a handful of very rich households drag the average away from anything a normal life looks like. The median is the household standing exactly in the middle, and it is the only one of the two worth comparing yourself to.

Our figures are median household total wealth in great britain, by age of household head. taken from the dataset behind the Office for National Statistics, Wealth and Assets Survey rather than from anybody's summary of it, read on 2026-09-14. If a figure elsewhere disagrees with ours, check which of those four choices they made before assuming either is wrong.

Is my net worth figure stored or sent anywhere?

No. The calculation happens in your browser and nothing is sent to us. There is deliberately no share link for this calculator, unlike the projection one — your net worth is the most sensitive figure on this site, and a shareable link is exactly how it would escape.

The one exception is that you can ask us to email the statement to you. That is opt-in, you type the address yourself, and it is described on our privacy page.
